Jeon Ji-hyun in movie with Zhang Ziyi
Top star Jeon Ji-hyun will be in a movie with Zhang Ziyi!
She has been in China for a meeting with Zhang and director Wong for a new film.
Jeon is currently busy filming Snow Flower and the Secret Fan in Hong Kong. It is known that her appearance in the film, Blood: The Last Vampire has helped her greatly for her casting in this new film.
It's also rumored that she will be acting as a lesbian and will be nude in some scenes with Zhang Ziyi as the character named, Nari.
This movie is about the 19th century when women did not have rights in China. The main character females receive the secret letter that they share with love and friendship. |

Mainland censors spare Jeon Ji-hyun
The Chinese American director Wayne Wong directed Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, based on Chinese American writer Lisa See's English novel of the same title, has already confirmed Zhang Ziyi and Korean star Jeon Ji-hyun as its stars. However the film company in order to pass the Mainland film censorship system will turn the original novel's lesbian plot into a friendship without regard for age in order to make a big pile from the Mainland market. Zhang Ziyi and Jeon Ji-hyun's rumored bed scene thus has vanished.
The story takes place in the early Republic era in a remote area in the Hubei province, where a group of women whose feet were bind lived in isolation. They would use "women letter" to communicate with the same sex, they even wrote the "women letter" on their chests - hinting at homosexuality. Reportedly Shu Qi was afraid of the film's nude scene and turned it down (ah, è diventata casta la troiona - NdGetter). The role finally landed in the hands of Korean star Jeon Ji-hyun. Taiwan group F4 member also has a part.
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan will officially begin production this month. One of the film's executive producer, Shanghai Film Group expressed that the film will not involve any homosexual elements. The female camaraderie will be different from lesbian love. It will be an exchange of friendship. The entire film will only be about a friendship regardless of age because homosexual subjects will not possibly pass Mainland inspection for release. The fact is since the Ang Lee directed film Lust, Caution's 2007 release and its subsequent storm, Mainland film inspection standards have become narrower and narrower. Any subject that involves sex or daring concepts cannot avoid being cut. If it wants to make a big sum from the enormous market of 1.3 billion people, the film inevitably has to change its story to accommodate the censors. |

It looks like Guan Yu is the new Yip Man. Chinese filmmakers are scrambling to produce multiple films about legendary Chinese military general Guan Yu even as IP MAN 2 and THE GRAND MASTER, dueling biopics of Wing Chun grandmaster Yip Man from directors Wilson Yip and Wong Kar-wai are preparing to be to released. And once again Donnie Yen, China’s current leading action icon, is at the center of attention when it comes to casting, at least for one of them.
Felix Chong and Alan Mak are developing the tentatively titled GUAN YUN CHANG, which focuses on one portion of Guan Yu’s life where he was held captive by warlord Cao Cao and went on a journey by horse to face various obstacles and behead several generals along the way.
Guan Yu is an icon and revered historical figure in China, well known for his ruddy complexion, full beard and prowess with the long-handled blade known as a guan dao for which, according to legend, he invented.
Yen has been offered the lead in the production which is scheduled to begin shooting in March. But how he will find time in between other projects and the distractions that come with being one of the most sought after leading men in Asia is anyone’s guess. Although shooting on IP MAN 2 ended last year, he’s also starring in THE LEGEND OF CHEN ZHEN and has countless offers pouring in for more films.
“I don’t know why so many filmmakers want me to play folk heroes or historical figures,” said Yen when speaking to Chinese press. “I have heard that many are shooting Guan Yu films, and Louis Koo would be joining one. Very fascinating… To me, this is a very challenging role. I’d be acting and action directing so the pressure is quite big. My schedule is already fully packed this year but I’m still getting new scripts, more than I could handle.”
In addition to the Guan Yu film, Yen has been offered the lead in a remake of the comic-to-film fantasy actioner A MAN CALLED HERO and the role of the Monkey King in a new adaptation of the literary classic “Journey to the West.” He’s also being considered for lead roles in Peter Chan’s JUNGKU: THE MAN FROM 18TH HELL and LEGEND OF SAINTLY PHYSICIAN LI, a film on the life of Ming Dynasty-era doctor Li Shi-zhen.
Benny Chan is planning to direct a Guan Yu film called LEGEND OF MILITARY GOD with Louis Koo in talks to star. What’s funny about this is that Koo is well known for his addiction to tanning salons and even admits himself that he already looks the part.
“I’m in talks about this project right now. The script is a big draw,” Koo said. “I’m to play Guan Yu. Very challenging. My face is pretty tan, don’t need make-up. If there are many filmmakers wishing to make a film on Guan Yu, it means this subject is very popular. I don’t fear comparisons.”
Two other Guan Yu films that have been announced in the last year and are planned for production by the end of 2010 include Yang Zi’s MILITARY SAINT YUN CHANG and GUAN GONG which is written by Liu Heng. |

Tsurugidake wins 52nd Blue Ribbon Awards
Seven of Tokyo's major sports newspapers announced their 52nd annual Blue Ribbon Awards on Wednesday. This year, the title of Best Picture was given to Daisaku Kimura's Tsurugidake: Ten no Ki.
Tsurugidake was actually the first film directed by the accomplished cinematographer, who is 70 years old. Although the Best Newcomer prize is usually given to actors, he received it this year for his debut as a director. Meanwhile, the Best Director prize was awarded to Miwa Nishikawa, who previously won the award in 2007 for her movie Yureru.
Best Picture: Tsurugidake: Ten no Ki (Daisaku Kimura)
Best Director: Miwa Nishikawa (Dear Doctor)
Best Actor: Tsurube Shofukutei (Dear Doctor)
Best Actress: Haruka Ayase (Oppai Bare)

Mag: live-action Vampire Hunter D, more anime planned
The January/February issue of Marrs' Canadian horror magazine Rue Morgue reports that 60-year-old author Hideyuki Kikuchi "is busy working on a Vampire Hunter D live-action film with the producer of the Biohazard video game (a.k.a. Resident Evil in North America), writing a new novel about vampires, entitled Yashakiden, and planning a new VHD anime series in Japan."
Kikuchi created the character of D as a half-human, half-vampire hunter of vampires in a desolate far future. Digital Manga Publishing has been releasing Kikuchi's original Vampire Hunter D novels in North America, and it is also publishing a manga version by Saiko Takaki as well as the first novel volumes of Yashakiden. Streamline Pictures and Urban Vision both released the 1985 anime video adaptation of Vampire Hunter D in North Amercia, while Urban Vision also released the 2000 movie version, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. |
